AT&T to Introduce Metered Wired Service
It was bound to happen, and now it has. AT&T announced recently its intent to place a monthly 150 GB usage cap on current DSL services. U-Verse customers are also affected, with their cap set at 250 GB per month. The program will go into effect on 2 May 2011. AT&T claims the cap will only affect 2% of its users, since the average customer consumes about 18 GB per month. Metered internet access has already been implemented in Canada by carriers like Bell Canada, but the CRTC will allow consumers to voice their concerns about the program at a hearing to be held in July 2011.

How the Public Perceives Community Information Systems by Pew Internet
According to this new study, citizens in cities where the information environment is perceived to be open and forthcoming feel more satisfied with their civic lives. Based on research conducted over eight months in Macon, GA, San Jose, CA, and Philadelphia, PA, the study also found that broadband users felt less satisfied with their community, suggesting that a better local information system begets more critical and activist citizens, while knowledgeable and empowered citizens are more likely to engage in community activities and, as a result, be more satisfied with their home town.

Connected Home Devices Market Data by ABI Research

This latest research paper shows that Samsung held almost a 20% share in the category of flat-panel TVs (LCD, LED, and plasma) in the first three quarters of 2010, besting second place LG by about 5%. While televisions were big sellers, the market for game consoles declined from 2009, as industry leaders saw heavy fluctuations in demand from quarter to quarter. Analysts see this decline more as a function of consumers waiting for the next generation of equipment, rather than a loss of interest in gaming as a whole.

The Wireless Home Video Market by ABI Research

While "cutting the cord" remains a holy grail for many avid consumer electronics users, the distribution of wireless video remains a unique challenge, according to this recent report. Hybrid solutions are still the most likely to dominate, and many firms are flocking to such standards (P1905.1 or tri-band solutions, for example). Other companies are entering into strategic alliances to cover more bases (Wilocity and Atheros with WiGig and 802.11n; WirelessHD and WiGig again, based on 60GHz). In the end, the study finds that it will take time for standardization, and the benefits derived therefrom, to take hold.
