CrossTalk Receives Recognition
CrossTalk is a labor of love for the staff here at Actiontec. Many late night hours are spent combing through all of the news and research available and cataloging it in our comprehensive database. So, we're proud to have been given a couple of awards from Network Product Guide: a "Hot Companies 2011 Finalist" and an award for "Product Management/Marketing Initiative or Program of the Year." We've also been recognized as a finalist for a 2011 Stevie, which are awarded by American Business Awards and are one of most coveted prizes in the industry. Thanks for your continued support and enthusiasm.

Synergy, Synergy, Synergy: CrossTalk Enters Blogging Fray
In addition to the awards, we'd also like to point you toward the premiere of our brother publication, the official Actiontec CrossTalk blog. According to its introductory post, the blog intends to be "a way to highlight ongoing stories that we feel are significant to fellow telecommunications industry members, as well as other interested individuals. We'd also like to keep you abreast of developments here at Actiontec, including new products, new technologies, and new partnerships we develop." In short, a kind of daily update in the same vein as CrossTalk, the newsletter, but timelier and able to keep up with the speed at which our industry moves, changes, and charges forward. It may not be able to cover all the bases this newsletter does, and you won't be able to fold it up and stick in your back pocket (yet), but we think it will be a worthy Internet destination for anybody interested in the things we discuss here. If you can, stop by and say hello.

Even with subscriptions heading downhill, according to the latest surveys, cable companies are still the first choice for users when they decide to install broadband. Research released on 17 May 2011 by the Leichtman Research Group showed that roughly two out of three people choose cable as their broadband supplier, with the majority of these signing up with Comcast.

As a comparison, in the first quarter of this year, top cable firms signed up over 850,000 subscribers, compared to 425,000 for top telephone companies over the same period

The Social Life of Health Information, 2011 by Pew Research

As the online experience matures, more people are depending on the Internet for health information in the U.S., particularly in seeking advice from peers. Doctors, nurses, and other health professionals remain the no. 1 source for people with health concerns, but there are active, well-connected groups of patients and caregivers who are using online resources to augment their health knowledge and share information.

Residential Gateways Take Over Broadband CPE Volume from InStat

Residential gateway revenues are expected to top $10 billion by 2015, according to recently released research by In-Stat. This rise in the CPE space is mainly caused by providers favoring gateways over modems, which fulfill customer needs today and promise future revenue possibilities for operators. Other salient points:
  • Residential gateway shipments will surpass modems by 2014, bolstered by built-in Wi-Fi and routing features
  • Fixed satellite CPE revenues to reach $340 million by 2014

Pay-TV Subscriber Market Data from ABI Research

ABI Research's latest study, "Pay-TV Subscriber Market Data," has been released and contains some interesting data regarding the ongoing battle between cable and telco/Internet TV. According to the report, 11.3 million pay-TV subscribers were added to the rolls at the end of Q1 2011(total number by end of 2011: 760 million). And while cable TV continues to hold the largest market share of subscribers, its share has dropped from 72% in 2009 to 69% in 2010, with even greater declines incurred in Western Europe and North America. Much of this decline can be traced to the increased choice consumers have in spending their home entertainment dollars.

Residential Energy Management 2011: Trends and Opportunities from Parks Associates

In this latest piece of market intelligence, Parks Associates projects that 13% of U.S. households will include some type of energy management network by 2015. This infrastructure will include lighting controls, programmable thermostats, and other self-monitoring systems.

These systems will go hand-in-hand with growing consumer interest in energy savings to create opportunities outside the utility industry, and while many established firms, such as ADT, GE, Intel, and Best Buy have already entered the market and are gearing up to market their services, this segment is ripe for growth over the next three to five years.
