Technology Leadership

Actiontec sets the bar for home broadband performance and has continued our technological innovations while building home broadband products that are fast, powerful, and fun. Over the years, we've researched and invested in the latest technologies to connect people to the applications and content they care about. We've launched an impressive series of 'industry firsts.' And we're not stopping anytime soon. Our company is committed to staying ahead of the game, by exploring all the latest developments in silicon, broadband, and consumer trends.

Here's a quick look at some of our technical innovation, along with an overview of how this technology fits into the Actiontec vision for the digital home.

From day one, we've set the bar when it comes to the digital home.

The Multi-LAN Network Adapter features best-in-class wireless technology. The WCB3000 has two radios and four antennas to support 802.11n concurrent 2 x 2 operation on both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequency bands. This translates to faster wireless speeds, better range to reach the far corners of the home, and more bandwidth to alleviate congestion as more and more devices vie for a wireless connection in the home.

Faster speeds and superior performance specifications are important to deploying triple play and IPTV services. However, performance alone isn't enough to give broadband service providers a competitive advantage. No matter their size, today's broadband providers are looking to reduce the complexity and operating costs associated with deploying triple play services.

That's where our vision of 'universal versatility' comes in. We've chartered new ground in the development of broadband CPE devices. Rather than creating lower cost devices that are specialized for each network type and/or service, we build solutions that can seamlessly fit into any network topology. This means that the same device model can be used in virtually any network type?whether it's FTTH, FTTC, ADSL, VDSL...

The result? There's just one SKU to manage, one product for customer service to learn, less inventory to handle, and upgrading residential customers to faster speeds and new services is seamless. Real-world feedback from the field shows that this approach brings significant bottom line benefits.

Bringing a broadband signal to the home is only half the picture. Consumers are less concerned with the broadband pipe connected to their home, but really care about the applications it enables: streaming an HD movie to a tablet while relaxing in the backyard, watching the latest on-demand movie in the bedroom or viewing Flickr photos on the large screen TV in the living room. For this reason, we offer innovative home networking solutions based on the latest MoCA standards to ensure subscribers make the most of their broadband experience.

We've been working with MoCA from the start. In fact, in 2006 we introduced the industry's first broadband router equipped with built-in MoCA support. Today, millions of residential consumers have Actiontec MoCA solutions running in their homes. We play an active role in the MoCA Alliance, and stay on the forefront of the latest MoCA standards and developments.

Consumers want their home broadband experience on their terms?a flat panel display above the fireplace, seamless content throughout every room in the house. And most importantly, they don't want an expensive rewiring project or a messy tangle of cables connected to their sleek HDTV.

That's why we've pioneered the use of wireless HD in the home. Our breakthrough MyWirelessTV solution offers uncompromised HDTV over standard Wi-Fi networks. With MyWirelessTV, consumers can connect their television to the set top box without having to use an obtrusive cable. Our solution leverages the latest technologies (including the industry's lowest latency) to deliver solid, multi-room HD performance, even on high traffic home networks.

With apps like whole-home DVR and smart home control, home networks are becoming increasingly sophisticated and consumer expectations are at an all time high. We want to start watching a show on the TV in the living room and then finish watching it on a cell phone or tablet by the pool.

As content moves from device to device, the home gateway will play an increasingly prominent role in connecting and managing content and devices. That's why we've pioneered the development of the 'smart home gateway.' We build our broadband home routers and gateways with the following criteria in mind:

  • Powerful enough to support demanding multimedia applications, including support for multiple HD streams
  • Intelligent enough to facilitate content routing and sharing across multiple devices
  • Flexible software/middleware architecture to easily enable new home applications (without a major firmware upgrade)

TV entertainment is no longer a passive experience. Over the past years, innovations have changed the way television content is distributed and consumed. Today's audience expects more flexibility and freedom when it comes to how they access their entertainment, what they watch, and where they watch it.

Microsoft Mediaroom is the most widely deployed IPTV platform. It extends the TV experience across all screens in subscriber's lives and enables the delivery of high-quality live TV and video on demand over IP network infrastructures.

We have worked closely with Microsoft from the start to ensure our solutions seamlessly integrate into a Mediaroom environment. Our company has been on the leading edge of gateway vendors in the Mediaroom environment. In fact, our work in interoperability testing with Microsoft began before a dedicated program for residential gateways was put in place. We've built a state of the art Microsoft Mediaroom test environment at our corporate headquarters in Sunnyvale, California. By testing our gateways in a controlled IPTV production environment, we can ensure seamless and smooth deployments in the field.

Here's a sampling of our Microsoft Mediaroom firsts:

  • Actiontec was the first residential gateway vendor to obtain Mediaroom from Microsoft for interoperability testing.
  • Actiontec was the first gateway vendor to become a Mediaroom partner.
  • Actiontec was the first gateway vendor authorized to use the Mediaroom logo in commercial publications.
