Get a Stable Internet Connection for Gaming

When it comes to gaming, let’s face it, having dodgy WiFi will not cut it. The mortal enemy to gaming is an internet connection that isn’t stable. Unreliable internet runs the risk of latency and lag or a dropped connection altogether. All of which will completely kill your gaming experience.

When it comes to setting up your home network, you want to make sure that your WiFi signal is strong so that your WiFi speed is fast. Together, these create a stable internet connection. Not only does this help with your gaming experience but will also make your experience better for all of you other connected devices.

So, how do you make sure that your internet connection is stable for gaming. Try these helpful tips:

Check your internet connection speed

Reducing lag and latency helps increase your internet speed. The faster your internet or WiFi speed, the easier you can connect your home network for online gaming.

For seamless gaming, you want an internet speed of about 15-20 megabits-per-second (Mbps) at a minimum. This is a good WiFi speed for the average gamer.

However, sometimes your internet speed isn’t suffering because you have bad internet speeds. The issue could be that you have too many devices connected to your network at the same time. As a result, your network suffers high latency which causes lag.

If this is the case, you need to get some of these devices and applications to stop using up all of your bandwidth. Here’s how:

Reduce the bandwidth that other programs and devices are using up

As we said, too many devices connected or too many programs running at the same time will eat up all of the bandwidth that you have.

Some of these devices are the typical things like smartphones, tablets and laptops. But the programs might be less front of mind. Think: security scanners, chat messenger and other apps.

All of these device, programs and applications running at once quickly take over the bandwidth that you have. You can easily identify the devices and disconnect them, but the applications might be running in the background without you even noticing.

Here’s what you can do:

For devices: Disconnect them for your WiFi when you are not using them during gaming.

For programs and applications: On your PC or gaming console, open the task manager to see everything that is currently running. You can close out active programs and applications that are unnecessary and reclaim bandwidth.

Dedicate a router to gaming only

Another tip is to invest in an additional router that you only use for gaming. This way, you will get a strong WiFi signal solely to your gaming console instead of having it split between your other connected devices. A split signal is inherently weaker. Skip this risk by getting a modern model router that channels more internet bandwidth to your gaming console.

Place your gaming router in a good spot

Where you place your router also matters. Make sure that your gaming router is placed near to your gaming console. This way, your router will supply a strong WiFi signal to your console for efficient gaming.

Optimal placement includes making sure that the router is up off of the floor and not tucked into any corners. You want to make sure that it is in the same room and near to your gaming console, and not blocked by walls or other barriers.

If you have followed all of the steps up until this point and your internet connection is still lagging, it might be wise to switch up your line of connection.

Improve your connectivity

Improving your connectivity can definitely look like making sure that your router is not facing any obstacles like wireless speakers, microwave ovens, mobile chargers, etc. However, improving your connectivity can also look like a sort of wired connection as well. Hear us out:

Turning to a powerline connection or a MoCA coaxial connection might be the best solution for your gaming situation. Powerline adapters use the existing powerline wiring in your home to form a fast and stable internet connection. MoCA network adapters and MoCA technology use the existing coaxial wiring to do the same thing.

Same outcome, different wiring.

Which means a stable gaming experience every single time you play. Powerline adapters and MoCA adapters are easy to set up. There are two steps:

First, plug one powerline adapter into a wall outlet closest to your router.

Second, plug the second powerline adapter into a wall outlet closest to your device.

A powerline or MoCA supplemented network offers reliable internet connection every time. (Which is reliable gaming every time.)

Both of these technologies help boost your internet speeds for gaming by creating a sort of data “superhighway” directly to your gaming device. This way, you can get speeds of up to 1 Gbps* to get rid of lag when gaming.
