A recent survey from Parks Associates indicates that 52% of US broadband households watch online video on a connected TV, lending to the rising popularity of watching TV and movies at home. 55% of those surveyed consider watching TV or movies at home among their top two favorite leisure activities.

Despite the decline in total hours spent watching videos, consumers are reporting watching more hours watching videos on a TV. This growth can be attributed to connected devices providing access to Internet video on TVs.

Additional findings include:

  • The increase in video streaming services could cause consumers to be more hesitant to add another monthly subscription, leading providers to adopt freemium and ad-bases subscriptions.
  • 19% of consumers subscribe Netflix, Hulu or Amazon Prime Video, a 6% increase from 2017.
  • In 2016, consumers watched an average of 29.5 hours of online video per week. In 2018, however, consumers watched an average of 24.7 hours per week.
