CBS Network CEO Les Moonves announced during a recent earnings call that in-house developer CBS Studios is developing content solely for streaming video services. While CBS Studios is known mostly for selling content to CBS’ own channels, developing shows for other outlets is not unheard of, as evinced by ABC’s new fall offering, “The Club,” which numbers among the studio’s “OEM” creations.
The recent trend toward purpose-built television shows (and the audiences they attract) has rekindled the demand for more original series. And since CBS Studios can make more content than the company’s own outlets can show, making shows (particularly niche programming than might be passed on by the networks) for streaming services makes sense.
Although Moonves did not reveal which services CBS Studios would partner with, he did indicate that CBS “will be producing more and more shows for more and more outlets, including major streaming companies and other emerging distributors.”
