TAT-1 (Transatlantic No. 1), the first transatlantic telephone cable, is inaugurated on this date in 1956. Initially carrying 36 telephone channels, the project was overseen by the General Post Office of the UK, the American Telephone and Telegraph Company, and the Canadian Overseas Telecommunications Corporation, at a cost of 120 million pounds.
