Fixed 5G Coming Soon to a Town Near You
The talk of the net this week is all about the trials AT&T and Verizon are holding to test their fixed “pre-5G” service, which they should roll out during the latter part of 2018.
Fixed 5G is a wireless connection to the Internet like its predecessor 4G LTE but meant for home use to replace DSL, FiOS and broadband services.
Most of the testing is occurring around college towns and large universities, which provides a great test environment replete with voluminous college users and a variety of massive upload and download applications.
There is word that Verizon will start servicing customers in the Sacramento, California area as early as mid-2018. The biggest concern for consumers and business users is whether it will be as fast and reliable as their current hard-wired connections with local ISPs. Another question on everyone’s mind is what will this new service cost, and will it be affordable enough to make the switch?
