Mediacom Completes DOCSIS 3.1 Deployment in 22 States

Mediacom has just completed the deployment of DOCSIS 3.1 across 22 states. In most of these markets, 1 Gbps down, 50 Mbps up service with a 6 TB usage cap will cost $140 per month, while a 500 Mbps down, 30 Mbps up service with a 4 TB usage cap will cost users $120 per month.

The move makes Mediacom the first major U.S. cable company to fully transition to the DOCSIS 3.1 “Gigasphere” platform, which will allow them to potentially serve over 3 million customers in these 22 states. According to Mediacom’s CTO, they’ve also deployed the groundwork for multi-gig speeds in the future.

With the growth in the use of Streaming, Gaming and Smart devices, consumers are demanding increasingly faster internet speeds, and DOCSIS 3.1 is the solution for cable providers who can’t route fiber quick enough or affordably. Additionally, it supports capacities of at least 10 Gbps downstream and 1 Gbps upstream, so providers like Mediacom will be able to bump up those speeds when the demand increases.
