Level 3 Communications Configuration Error Drops Internet Across the US
Last week, a massive Internet outage involving multiple Service Providers, including Comcast, Charter, Cox, and Verizon dropped connections for millions of people across the US. Level 3, an Internet backbone company and enterprise ISP which provides support for each of the providers, reported that the cause was not a malicious attack, but a ‘configuration error’ resulting from human error.
Several major East Coast cities including New York, Chicago and Boston experienced significant outages. On the west coast, Seattle, Portland and the San Francisco Bay area were also affected. Other major impacted cities included Dallas, Houston and Minneapolis. Connections to-date appear to have been restored.
