In a recently published forecast, Light Reading predicted that U.S. cable operators will roll out their 10 millionth Wi-Fi hotspot by early 2015. This number represents a huge increase from the scant 250,000 installed at the end of 2013. The publication also projected that this number will continue to soar over the next few years as cable operators blanket their regions with both public and private access points.
Comcast and Cablevision lead the way today, with 4.6 million and 1 million hotspots deployed, respectively, due largely to their focus on community Wi-Fi, or home hotspots. But they’re not alone: other large domestic MSOs, such as Time Warner, Cox, Charter, and Bright House, are working to catch up, and could account for more than 100,000 hotspots collectively by the end of the year.
