It appears as if the dam is about to break. Comcast has documented plans to bring its Xfinity app to mobile devices. This comes on the heels of Charter making its Spectrum TV app available on the Roku platform. It’s also a marked difference from Comcast’s previous strategy, which concentrated on hardware leasing, going so far as to create the IP-based Reference Design Kit, which has become the industry’s standardized software stack for video CPE.

 

Comcast is only reacting to the reality of the market here. The Internet is seriously shaking up the video market, and the company probably feels that it can make these kinds of concessions in the video segment now that it has a strategy in place to continue to exist in people’s homes. Among Comcast’s future products is a gigabit gateway that will further facilitate the upcoming Internet of Things revolution.
