It may be a merry Christmas for a lot of people this December, but for some unlucky souls, some of the trappings of the season could be slowing their wireless speeds. UK telecom regulator Ofcomm noted recently that Christmas lights only add to the long list of devices that could slow down one’s Wi-Fi speeds. If this occurs, fixes include changing the wireless channel, or relocating the gateway/router being used to a higher position.

Another article refuted some of the myths that have grown around the issue of Wi-Fi interference, calling out numerous common household devices can cause wireless problems, including “microwave ovens, cordless phones, Bluetooth devices, wireless video cameras, outdoor microwave links, wireless game controllers, Zigbee devices, fluorescent lights, (and) WiMAX (devices).”
