FierceTelecom recently released a comprehensive look at five critical trends in the telecom industry, and we paid particular attention to the last of series. The reason? The last of the series covered the growing importance of network security.
If you follow the news, you may already have heard of the distributed-denial-of-service (DDoS) attack on Dyn in October. What was most disturbing about these attacks, in our opinion, was the nature of the botnet created by the assault.
Instead of infecting poorly secured corporate Windows PCs, the designers went after residential networks. And sure, it relied on phishing emails, but it also went after DVR’s and IP cameras, which played a significant role in disabling the attack’s target. A standard password secures these devices, and most users are not even aware their devices were/are compromised.
