The benefits of 802.11ac Wave 2 are fairly dramatic and straightforward: reduced network congestion on public and residential networks, and lower power consumption for mobile devices, to name two. Wave 2 is also set to become the highest shipping wireless standard yet, supporting more than 60 client devices and 25 routers. And while delivering the information about Wave 2 to the public is not getting off to a great start, the sheer number of Wave 2 devices coming to market will likely overcome any customer confusion.
Ruckus, Aruba, Cisco, and Xirrus have announced Wave 2 devices for enterprises and service providers, while Asus, Buffalo, D-Link, and Netgear, among others, are bringing Wave 2 to residential customers. On the other end, Samsung, Nexus, ZTE, and Xiaomi have begun manufacturing mobile devices that take advantage of Wave 2; Apple and most other smartphone makers will most likely add support starting with their 2016 models.
