Windstream announced that it has acquired fellow ISP Earthlink. The deal is an all-stock transaction valued at around $1.1 billion dollars, including debt. Earthlink, headquartered in Atlanta, GA, serves more than 150,000 businesses and about 1 million consumers, and while it still maintains a sizable (albeit declining) dial-up internet service for its customers, it also offers enterprise services for small- and medium-sized businesses.
The new company will retain the Windstream name, and keep its headquarters in Little Rock, AK. Most analysts believe that the acquisition continues Windstream’s efforts to expand its business opportunities, especially in light of the company’s previous failures in updating its residential broadband footprint, which led to declining DSL subscriber numbers.
