The Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) recently announced its latest Qi specifications. The new parameters allow for wireless charging pads to provide as much power (up to 15 watts) to the handset as wired charging. According to the Consortium’s press release: “Several manufacturers already offer wired fast charging for their devices, providing as much as 60% charge in as little as 30 minutes. The latest Qi specification empowers them to extend this speed to wireless charging as well.”
The WPC’s Qi specifications also approved new test procedures and tools needed to ensure compliance with the new guidelines, which also promise backward compatibility with existing Qi products. The new specifications will only be available to WPC members, a roster that includes Nokia, Samsung, Motorola, HTC, LG, and Panasonic, among other industry heavyweights.
