Runtime Service Error for Oculus Rift
Oculus Rift headsets all over the world are malfunctioning due to an expired security certificate. The exact error that owners of the headset are seeing is “can’t reach Oculus runtime service.”
The software certificate is running on Windows. Microsoft’s security system checks software vendor files to ensure they are legitimate. This protocol is in place to protect your personal information and data. However, it is the vendor’s responsibility to keep their security certificate up to date. It appears that Oculus unwittingly let theirs lapse.
On March 7th, Oculus posted a message to users advising that they were aware of the problem and working on it. The message reads “Our teams apologize for any inconvenience this may be causing you and appreciate your patience while we work on a resolution. We’ll share more updates here as we have them. Thanks.”
Some users have been using a workaround until Oculus resolves the issue. A user on Reddit posted the fix on how to change the date/time of your machine to trick the system into authenticating.
However, if you don’t mind waiting, Oculus will have it fixed soon.
