WiFi 6 Offers More than High Speeds

Aug 14, 2019

WiFi 6 is the next generation of WiFi technology. We’ve talked about it before, but mostly focusing on the higher speeds that it offers. However, WiFi 6 brings much more to the table than improved speeds. Here are some of the other features you can expect:

Better coverage for connected devices

The latest WiFi 6 iteration is designed to have better capacity, coverage, and performance for connected devices. This isn’t only for in the home. The coverage is better in challenging public environments, like shopping centers, stadiums, or transportation stations where a lot of people are trying to connect at once.

Better coverage is beneficial to everyone, from individual consumers, smart home owners, WiFi operators and large-scale businesses.

More data

The WiFi Alliance noted that higher data rates are also a key benefit of WiFi 6. The multi-user multiple input, multiple output (MU-MIMO) feature allows more data to be transferred at one time. Also, access points (AP) can handle a large number of devices all at once.

Target wake time

The target wake time (TWT) feature isn’t about making sure that you as the user get enough rest (there are other apps for that). The TWT feature allows devices to decide when they want to “wake up” to receive or send data. This feature will help significantly increase a device’s battery life depending on how long a device spends sleeping.

Improved speeds

Still, one of the biggest allures of WiFi 6 is improved high-speed internet. WiFi 6 offers a 6.1 Gbps increase from WiFi 5. In total, that’s 9.6 Gbps of speed. It’s unlikely that a user will reach that speed, but if they did, it doesn’t have to go to one single device. The 9.6 Gbps can be split up across a whole network of devices for faster speeds for all devices on the network.

Overall, WiFi 6 has a lot of benefits for all.
