Much rumored, there is new Wi-Fi standard starting to creep into commercial products, and it is taking speed to the next level. 802.11ad Wi-Fi is rated for 4,600Mbps for data throughput – or quadruple the current rate offered by 802.11ac. It’s also faster than standard Gigabit Ethernet and much faster that most home broadband speeds.

That being said, any savvy Wi-Fi user will tell you there is always a big difference between theoretical maximum speeds and real-world user experience. Still, it appears that 802.11ad will allow previously unthinkable things like streaming high bit-rate 4K HDR movies over Wi-Fi. Interested now? There is also a possibility that the new standard will make wireless virtual reality headsets more useable.
