The next step for wireless standards is beginning to take shape. 802.11ax will feature speeds up to 1Gbps (or more) and will be backward compatible with existing 802.11 standards. The target date for full ratification of the new standard is 2019, although the  specification is still in development.

The new specification will be designed for potential use in the 1GHz to 6GHz spectrum, should those spectrums become publicly available.
