Even though OTT (Over The Top) video delivery systems have been viewed as a threat to traditional operators, a convergence between OTT and cable systems may be on the horizon. According to a new report, MSOs are “pursuing strategies to become distribution partners of OTT streaming services, utilize OTT device platforms, and add OTT apps to their consumer services.”

Cable providers such as Time Warner Cable now allow customers to watch cable TV through an MSO-branded app on Roku and Xbox 360 devices, while Comcast’s recent interconnection deal with Netflix is another example of how an MSO can backhaul OTT video and deliver it directly to the consumer. These deals, notes the report, anticipate a future in which consumers experience a “blended experience where they can seamlessly discover and access their favorite TV programming and OTT content.”
