New research from Parks Associates, Modern Broadband: Competition and Retention at Gigabit Speeds, found that 22% of US broadband households have broadband service speeds of 100-999 Mbps. This is now the most common service tier. In addition, only 39% of US broadband households do not know their broadband speed. Only 6% of US broadband households have gigabit-speed services.

Interest in upgrading to gigabit speeds has also declined over the past two years. Those that do show interest in gigabit speeds do not necessarily adopt the service. Consumers fail to see a compelling need for these speeds.

Additional findings:

  • Of US broadband households that switched services in the past year, 50% did so to get a better price.
  • 36% of US broadband households switched to get better speeds.
  • In addition, only 39% of US broadband households do not know their broadband speed.
