Levels of AI Automation for Self-Driving Cars

The US Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) recently developed a 5-level scale to better define automation in self-driving cars. The scale ranges from level 0 – no automation to level 5 – full automation.

Google and Uber are among those who have their sights set on developing level 5 automation, however lofty that goal may be. Meanwhile, Audi, BMW, NVIDIA, Tesla and Volvo are developing cars with level 2 capabilities and are looking to reach level 4. The SAE expressed the unequivocal need for human assistance in all the automation levels except level 5.
