WiFi’s Biggest Upgrade (6GHz)

Since the start, WiFi has gone through a lot of changes. (Thank goodness for that!) Today’s evolved WiFi standard (WiFi 6) has seen a huge upgrade and offers so much more than we experienced in past WiFi standards.

Here’s a look at WiFi’s next biggest evolution:

First, What WiFi 6 offers:

Since the start, WiFi has gone through many standards.

Today, we are experiencing WiFi 6. With it, we get:

• Online connection with improvements similar to 5G
• Better traffic congestion control in public spaces
• Higher data rates and capacity, like 9.6 Gbps
• Better 2.4GHz and 5GHz spectrum support
• Increased in multi-user, multiple input, multiple output (MU-MIMO)
• Overall, better and faster performance
• More devices able to seamlessly and simultaneously connect at home

Even though WiFi 6 is the newest generation, it’s already gone through some big changes. Now the biggest upgrade since 1989 is here: WiFi 6E.

What is WiFi 6E?

WiFi 6E is the result of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) granting access to the 6GHz frequency band for anybody to use.

What this means is that your home WiFi network or company router can broadcast over three frequency bands instead of only two: 2.4GHz, 5GHz and 6GHz. That is a lot of open airwaves. Which means a lot clearer and faster WiFi connections.

Unlike 2.4GHz and 5GHz spectrum, 6GHz is a previously untapped spectrum. Especially for consumer use.

When can I expect to buy WiFi 6E devices?

You won’t see products that are marked with WiFi 6E compatibility until closer to the end of 2020. But when you do see these products, the WiFi 6E label means they support 6GHz. Regular WiFi 6 compatible devices will not. They will have to be marked with the “6E” label.

What is 6GHz and why does it matter?

The 6GHz frequency channel is a big deal because it hasn’t been available for consumer use before. This spectrum has higher throughput and lower latency than we have experienced previously with 2.4GHz and even 5GHz.

The 6GHz band is expected to bring better WiFi and device performance overall. It could be the solution for WiFi congestion because it offers more room for overlapping WiFi signals.

6GHz will benefit home WiFi networks and public WiFi networks. It will also better gaming experiences and allow for new product innovations. Think: better smartphones, AR/VR devices and wearables.

Say goodbye to “bad WiFi.”
