Key Learnings from Connectivity Week and Connections

CrossTalk attended the Connectivity Week Trade Show in late May, a must for anyone interested in learning more about the Smart Grid. Given the numerous sessions attended, CrossTalk has summarized the highlights in the white paper titled "The Smart Grid…Where we are now? What's next? How can Telecommunication Providers participate?"

CrossTalk also attended the Connections Trade Show a week ago in Santa Clara, CA, and here are some of the highlights gleaned from the sessions and courses attended:
  • Brand identity is becoming more important in the purchase process, as consumers seek good, reliable, and enduring quality; brand identity often becomes a differentiator in these situations
  • WalMart is moving up the consumer electronics food chain
  • Consumers spent $1.5 billion on technical support services in 2009; they are expected to spend $6 billion by 2014

The State of Online Video from Pew Research
Pew Research's Kristen Purcell has written a new report, "The State of Online Video," which, not surprisingly, offers an in-depth look at how online video is being distributed and consumed in 2010. Among its findings:

  • 75% of adults with broadband access at home watch video online
  • 10% of those aforementioned adults have paid to watch video online, up from 4% in 2007
  • 16% of broadband users have uploaded a video, with the greatest increase coming from the 30-to-49 year-old age group

Fiber-to-the-Home: North American Market Update by RVA LLC
RVA, a market research and consulting firm, has released its latest report, "Fiber-to-the-Home: North American Market Update." Focused on the FTTH and FTTP industries, it combines extensive research and interviews with experts in appropriate fields to provide a comprehensive overview of this segment. Among the report's findings:

  • Approximately 18.2 million homes (16% of U.S. households) passed for FTTH (as of March 30, 2010)
  • Over 5.8 million homes (5% of U.S. households) are connected via FTTH

Ecopinion 8: Separating Smart Grid from Smart Meters by Ecoalign
What are the consumer perceptions and expectations regarding the smart grid? Ecoalign, in its latest survey report, attempts to answer that very question. What answers did Ecoalign uncover? Read on:

  • Approximately 70% of Americans have not heard the phrase "smart grid"
  • "Consumers see smart grid as primarily a means to lower and/or manage rising energy bills."
  • Consumers felt that the top three expected benefits of a "smart grid" were: lower electricity bills; allow user analysis of source electricity consumption in the home to make energy management decisions; and the ability to decrease electricity consumption

In GigaOM Pro's latest analytic study, Google TV is given the once over, especially in light of both Microsoft's and Apple's less-than-successful forays into overhauling the TV ecosystem. In Andrew Brown's latest for Strategy Analytics, the author "examines in detail the market for embedded laptops, netbooks, and USB modems." Among his findings:
  • By the end of this year, sales of devices with integrated mobile broadband connectivity will exceed 100 million.
  • In 2014, 200 million mobile broadband modems will be sold
  • By 2014, the installed base of mobile broadband modems will exceed 415 million devices

Video Services and Subscribers by Infonetics
Infonetics Research has released the first edition of its 2010 biannual "Video Services and Subscribers" study, which provides in-depth analysis, worldwide and regional market size, and forecasts for telco IPTV services. Included in its findings:
  • Worldwide revenue derived by service providers and cable companies for IPTV, cable video, and satellite video services is forecast to top $250 billion in 2014
  • Average revenue per user (ARPU) for telco IPTV services in most regions remains lower than ARPU for cable and satellite services
  • In North America, the top two providers of video services in terms of annual revenue are Comcast and DirecTV

Home Energy Management by Pike Research
According to Pike Research, "amid historic volatility in energy prices and heightened concern about energy security and climate change, energy management and energy efficiency are hot topics." This relevant study looks into the global market for energy information displays, including display devices and web dashboards. Some of the report's interesting findings include:
  • Very low quantities of energy information displays (EIDs) have shipped thus far
  • Millions of EIDs to be shipped by 2012
  • 5 million EIDs to ship in 2015 to European and North American homes
  • EIDs will come in different formats, including in-home display devices, web dashboards, and mobile energy management applications
  • "By 2015, there will be over 11.1 million users of web dashboards worldwide, plus more than 2.6 million users of energy management applications on mobile devices."
