Verizon FiOS Router

Technology Marketing Corporation (TMC), a global integrated media company, today announced winners of the 2008 Communications Solutions Product of the Year Award.

According to Actiontec, the next-gen wireless broadband router allows service providers to increase service speeds beyond 100 Mbps and thereby enables them to meet an increasing consumer base.

Featuring TR-69+ remote management feature, the router provides end-to-end QoS support for voice and video, says company.

It simply took video-on-demand and the programming-guide information from the Web and passed it via coax out to my new television "network."

Instead, the FiOS giant is releasing two new routers, the MI424-WR from Actiontec and the UltraLine Series 3 model 9100 by Westell, that increase the speed of YOUR network by boosting the throughput of the coax cables to your TV. The gain is said to push speeds from from 75 MBps to 175 MBps and play to the content sharing capabilities of the high-def DVRs.

The new routers feature greater capacity, supporting 175 Mbps over up to four Wi-Fi simultaneously running networks. QoS/traffic prioritization and security settings can be configured independently for each network, using integrated dual-core processors that can also support multiple applications such as home security, home monitoring and network security.

Already a key vendor in the FiOS architecture, Actiontec has been providing Verizon with customer premise equipment for more than five years. This latest product selection further strengthens the relationship between the two companies.

...the new gateways, which Verizon will begin installing in homes within the next two months, offer some future-proofing for subsequent increases in speed -- and apparently the not-too-distant future. Tushar Saxena, Verizon?s director of home networking technologies, calls the new products ?devices for the next three to four years.?

Verizon said the units provide other features that take advantage of the bandwidth boost.

The new broadband routers, designed to Verizon's specifications by Actiontec and Westell, will use MoCA 1.1 technology to boost in-home speeds over coaxial cable to up to 175 Mbps from 75 Mbps and allow operation of multiple simultaneous Wi-Fi networks

To achieve this unprecedented performance level, Actiontec?s router features an advanced hardware design including an industry-first 64-bit, dual-core processor.

Overall, the general home broadband gateway market is now substantial, currently reaching about $6 billion annually, according to Infonetics estimates. And the increasing impact of IPTV triple-play is clear. For example, Actiontec Electronics Inc. has pointed out that it sold 4 million residential gateways, modems, and routers during its first decade of business, and then 1 million broadband gateways in four months in early 2007, mainly for triple-play IP video applications with Tier 1 and Tier 2 carriers.
