A new study from Jupiter Research forecasts a rise in web TV subscriptions, from 92.1 million in 2014 to 332.2 million by 2019. The report, “Mobile & Online TV & Video: OTT, IPTV & Connected Markets 2015-2019,” sees the North American market leading the upswing, followed closely by the Far East. Jupiter also predicts that, because of their long lifecycle, televisions without native Internet connectivity will not replaced; instead, devices like Chromecast and Amazon’s Fire TV stick will provide online services.
Jupiter noted further that with the continuing threat of OTT services, the traditional players in this segment need to act boldly, rather than get caught up in internecine squabbling, or risk obsolescence. The study also predicts a 4x growth in advertising dollars spent on “Video-On-Demand” services through 2019, (led by the Far East) and a 70% expansion of IPTV subscriber numbers during the same period.
