Video delivery and distribution made great strides last year, even if they were overshadowed by headline-grabbing technologies like virtual reality. Major developments surrounding home network optimization, video processing and IP video streaming, and cloud DVR deployments are pointing the way into the future, while companies like Amazon, Comcast, and Verizon continue to create new opportunities for bandwidth-expanding monetization.
With all these increases in speed, the bottleneck still exists at in-home Wi-Fi, although companies are attacking this problem, as well. Some have developed multi-access-point-and-software solutions to improve routing intelligence, while others are working on support for dynamic bandwidth provisioning. These behind-the-scenes infrastructure improvements don’t garner much ink in the technology press, but they do offer concrete improvements for residential video services that everyone can appreciate.
