Many smart TV makers want to differentiate their TV offerings with a unique blend of over-the-top, ad-supported programming. Samsung is one of them, expanding free OTT options for its smart TV users. The expansion includes programming channels from:

  • Pluto TV, a start-up based in Los Angeles, CA.
  • Wurl, a start-up based in Palo Alto, CA.

Samsung is an investor in Pluto and has already integrated about 20 of Pluto’s digital channels into Samsung’s free-to-consumer TV Plus platform. This platform previously delivered mostly over-the-air programming to consumers.

Also, Samsung added three more digital channels from Wurl to the TV Plus platform:

  • Outside TV
  • Danger TV
  • RiffTrax

Sean Doherty, CEO of Wurl stated that Samsung is breaking down the TV silos. Doing so will provide video producers with a more open opportunity to reach viewers and generate revenue.
