Virtual personal assistants (VPAs) such as Siri, Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa are being integrated into vehicles. According to IHS Markit, nearly 700 million VPA software platforms will be enabled in vehicles by 2024 through mobile devices or connected home devices.

Top Three VPA Formats

Embedded VPA. This format enables speech recognition system (SRS) and natural language understanding (NLU) for locally stored information that evoke a quick response, ideal for tasks most used in a car, such as HVAC commands and phone calls. Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa are expected to become the first embedded VPAs available. IHS Markit expects there to be about 12 million vehicles with this system by 2024.

Smartphone VPA Integration. This type of format is dependent on smartphone integration software framework like Apple CarPlay, Android Auto or SmartDeviceLink (SDL).  IHS Markit finds this type of system to be more prominent, expecting more than 300 million vehicles with smartphone VPA integration by 2024.

Device-to-Car. This format can send commands from a smart home device to the car, allowing you to start your car remotely. This format cannot control anything within the car. Nearly 40 million vehicles with this type of system will be present by 2024.
