According to an Internet Access Services Report, only two thirds of Americans have a choice of more than one broadband service provider delivering service of more than 10 Mbps. The study summarized responses from the end of 2015. It also found that in many cases, this was the local cable service provider, as nearly three quarters of all broadband service in the US was delivered by operators.

While progress with broadband competition may be slow, it is improving. The same study, conducted a year earlier in 2014 found that nearly 40% lacked a choice in broadband providers. As service providers begin embracing faster technologies like fiber and DOCSIS 3.1, expect that percentage to keep dropping.
